Management research to provide operational advice on improving quality, reducing costs and eliminating disparities.
Health care providers are continually searching for ways to improve care outcomes and patient safety while simultaneously lowering costs. In light of this, the concept of patient and family engagement has become a priority for health care organizations; engaging patients and their families is an effective strategy to work towards these important improvements in care.
In 2013, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation awarded a grant to HRET to study current patient and family engagement approaches in hospitals throughout the country. To complete this assessment, HRET created and sent a survey to a sample of hospital leaders asking them about their use of patient and family engagement strategies. The survey is currently in the field; the results will be disseminated next year via HRET’s website and a published article. Survey respondents received a tailored report that compares their use of patient and family engagement strategies with those of similar hospitals and with all hospitals that participated.
In addition to the survey, HRET created a patient and family engagement resource for hospital leaders. The purpose of this report is to help hospital leaders across the country take the right steps to effectively promote patient and family engagement strategies within their organizations. A Leadership Resource for Patient and Family Engagement Strategies report was released at the AHA Leadership Summit in July 2013.
The patient and family engagement survey is available for download. If you find the survey useful for your work, please mention it when citing sources of information.
