On the CUSP: Stop CAUTI Launches Second Cohort of Participating States

The second cohort of states participating in On the CUSP: Stop CAUTI launched the project in hospital units this month with an educational audioconference on Wednesday, March 2. Over the course of the 18-month project, hospital unit teams implement the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program to transform unit culture and apply evidence-based interventions to eliminate catheter-associated urinary tract infections. HRET leads the project in partnership with the Michigan Health and Hospital Association Keystone Center for Patient Safety and Quality, the University of Michigan, and the Johns Hopkins University Quality and Safety Research Group. The project is funded through a contract with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. For more information, visit http://www.onthecuspstophai.org/.

HPOE Webinar: The Impact of Drug Shortages on Hospitals, April 7

Drug shortages are having a significant effect on patient safety and hospital bottom lines. This free webinar will explore the national and international drug shortage crisis and present a new tool to help hospitals maintain and improve quality standards. A panel of experts will discuss why an unprecedented level of drug shortages is occurring, the ramifications of shortages within hospitals, responses of clinicians and organizations, and measures to address the situation—including the introduction of new federal legislation. The 2011 ISMP Medication Safety Self Assessment®, soon to be launched by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) in collaboration with HRET and AHA and through support from The Commonwealth Fund, is designed to help hospitals and health systems review and improve their safety practices and measure their progress in medication safety, including dealing with issues such as drug shortages. Webinar participants will learn how they can take advantage of this free tool to identify the impact of emerging safety risks and opportunities for change. Advance registration is required for this webinar. Click here to register, or contact hpoe@aha.org for more details.

Addressing Disparities in Hospital Readmissions, an April 28 HPOE Webinar

Recent research reveals that minorities are more likely to be readmitted for several conditions, including congestive heart failure and pneumonia, than their white counterparts. Hospitals are now devising system-wide initiatives to prevent readmissions, but a one-size-fits-all approach is unlikely to address disparities in this area. Specific strategies will be necessary to improve quality of care to diverse populations and prevent avoidable readmission. Join HRET on April 28 for a free webinar presenting the latest evidence on racial/ethnic disparities in hospital readmission rates and innovative strategies to address and prevent them, with a particular focus on multicultural and minority populations. This webinar, a collaboration between HRET and the Disparities Solutions Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, will provide the latest information on disparities interventions and findings from important disparities research. Advanced registration is required for this webinar. Click here to register, or contact hpoe@aha.org for more details.

Adoption of CT Colonography by U.S. Hospitals

Colorectal cancer is the second most prevalent cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Early detection and treatment can save lives, and Computed Tomographic Colonography (CTC) is a promising new method of cancer screening. The March, 2011 issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology features an article co-authored by former HRET Director of Research Megan McHugh, PhD and HRET Researcher Awo Osei-Anto, MPP, “Adoption of CT Colonography by U.S. Hospitals.” The article addresses the percentage of U.S. hospitals that offered the service in 2005-2008, and explores barriers and facilitators to adoption of this new technology. HPOE Releases New Guide on Reducing Preventable Mortality

Hospital leaders work hard every day to provide their patients with high quality care that is free of injury and harm. While most hospital deaths are not due to failures in care delivery, many deaths are preventable. Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence (HPOE) has released the Health Care Leaders Action Guide: Hospital Strategies for Reducing Preventable Mortality, the latest in its series of guides and toolkits designed to assist hospital leaders in improving quality and performance. This guide supports the American Hospital Association’s strategic performance commitment on eliminating preventable mortality that is included in the 2011-13 AHA Strategic Plan. It outlines eight steps hospital and health system leaders should consider when thinking about ways to reduce preventable mortality. Click here to download a copy of this latest HPOE guide.

A Call to Action: Creating a Culture of Health

Hospitals and health systems and their employees are critical resources in their communities because of their leadership and mission. As we move toward a health care delivery system that is focused even more on health and wellness, hospital and health system employees have a major role in leading the way and serving as role models for healthy living and fitness in their communities. The American Hospital Association’s latest long-range planning report, A Call to Action: Creating a Culture of Health, explores how hospitals can expand their health and wellness activities to provide the environment, programs, and incentives for hospital employees to serve as such role models. AHA and the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration hosted a national webinar for hospital and health system executives on February 23 that explored the findings of this report and the role of hospitals and health systems in creating a culture of health among their employees. Click here to access the free archived webinar, or contact hpoe@aha.org with questions.
