Patient Safety
Leadership Fellows
Recognized
 |
Ten graduates of
AHA’s premier leadership fellowship program were
recognized during the 2010 National Patient
Safety Foundation Congress held recently in
Orlando, Florida. The group, consisting of
hospital leaders and patient advocates,
commemorated their yearlong achievements in
advancing quality and safety improvements at
their home institutions and communities. The
program, now approaching its tenth year,
launched activities for the 2010-2011 class at
the recent AHA/Health Forum Leadership Summit in
July. More than 30 clinical and executive
leaders from across the U.S. and Canada have
been selected to participate in the 2010-2011
fellowship. The AHA-NPSF Fellowship program,
supported by HRET, is among several activities
of AHA’s Hospitals in
Pursuit of
Excellence platform, designed to offer
critical resources to hospitals and their
efforts to become high performing, highly
reliable providers of care. Click

Healthcare Quality (JHQ) recently
interviewed HRET President and JHQ
Editor Maulik S. Joshi, DrPH. In the interview,
Dr. Joshi addresses the definition of health
care quality as set forth by the Institute of
Medicine and focuses on the role of health care
and research librarians in improving health
care. Dr. Joshi describes ways in which
librarians can help to navigate and synthesize
complex health care information and can help to
engage clinicians and consumers. He also
discusses the role of technology and the balance

Funding Available for
State Level Coordination of On the CUSP: Stop
BSI
 |
A total of $5.8
million in funding is available for states that
are participating in a national project to
implement the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety
Program (CUSP) and reduce central
line-associated bloodstream infections in
hospitals. The funding, provided by the
Department of Health & Human Services’
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
(AHRQ), will be disbursed by HRET to states that
participate in the On the CUSP: Stop
BSI initiative. This initiative is
led by HRET in partnership with the Johns
Hopkins University Quality & Safety Research
Group and the Michigan Health & Hospital
Association Keystone Center for Patient Safety
& Quality. “This program is proven to
save lives and reduce health care costs,” said
AHA President Rich Umbdenstock. “That’s
why the AHA has encouraged every state to
participate in this vital, life-saving
initiative, and we salute the states and
hospitals that are already part of On the
CUSP: Stop BSI. The new $5.8 million will
allow participating and new states to apply for
up to $70,000 over a two-year project period to
cover part-time staffing and other needs.
In addition, AHRQ is providing
supplemental funding to support the project.

Health Care Leader
Action Guide on Implementation of Electronic
Health Records
 |
While there have been
numerous success stories about the power of
health IT to help hospitals provide safer, more
efficient care, realizing the true promise of
health IT can be harder than it looks. Together
with the College of Healthcare Information
Management Executives, as part of the Hospitals
in Pursuit of Excellence Signature Leadership
series, HRET has released the Health Care
Leader Action Guide on Implementation of
Electronic Health Records. The guide
gives hospital executives a basic understanding
of the challenges of implementing an electronic
health record and sets forth seven high-level
categories of action that executive teams should
consider in planning and implementing an EHR. Click here to learn more and

Early
Learnings from the Bundled Payment Acute Care
Episode Demonstration
Project
 |
The Acute Care
Episode Demonstration is a Centers for Medicare
& Medicaid Services project whose goals are
to improve coordination and quality of care,
align incentives between hospitals and
physicians, and provide financial incentives for
Medicare beneficiaries. Is the demonstration a
successful model that can be applied by other
hospitals around the country? A new HRET guide,
Early Learnings from the Bundled Payment
Acute Care Episode Demonstration Project,
explores this question. The guide describes the
experience of Hillcrest Medical Center, a Tulsa,
Oklahoma hospital participating in the Acute
Care Episode Demonstration project. The guide
details how the demonstration project functions
and sets forth six recommendations based on
lessons learned at Hillcrest. Click here for more
information and to download the guide.

Synthesis
Report on Accountable Care
Organizations
 |
Hospitals and health
systems considering whether to participate in
accountable care organizations (ACOs) should
assess their capabilities in several key areas
and be prepared to strengthen those competencies
where necessary, according to a report released
by the AHA Committee on Research. The report
synthesizes the research literature on ACOs,
including their potential impact, required
organizational competencies, and key questions
to consider as the federal and private sectors
prepare for widespread implementation of the
model. “Although the ACO concept has been
discussed for years, there is great opportunity
for learning as we move forward,” notes
Committee Chair Al Stubblefield. According to
the report, “Hospitals and health systems
considering ACO participation should assess
their capabilities in several key core
competencies that will likely be necessary for
successful ACO implementation, including IT
infrastructure, resources for patient education,
team-building capabilities, strong relationships
with physicians and other providers, and the
ability to monitor and report quality data.” Click here to access the full
report.
