HRET has selected
Atul Gawande, MD, MPH as the recipient of the
2011 TRUST Award. Established in 2003, the TRUST
Award honors individuals who have exhibited
visionary leadership in the health care field
and who symbolize HRET’s mission of leveraging
research and education to make a dramatic impact
in policy and practice. Dr. Gawande is a general
and endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women’s
Hospital, Associate Professor at the Harvard
School of Public Health and Harvard Medical

Yorker magazine. “The Selection Committee
praised Dr. Gawande for his surgical talents and
for being an innovator in driving change through
safe practices” said Al Stubblefield, president,
Baptist Health Care and chair of the HRET Board
of Trustees. “Dr. Gawande’s uniqueness as a
writer to connect with the consumer and provider
community is just one example of many showcasing
his influence in the field.” HRET President
Maulik S. Joshi, DrPH said, “Dr. Gawande’s
writings on the use of surgical checklists, the
costs of health care and health reform, and the
overall quality of health care have elevated the
social consciousness of these significant
issues.” HRET will honor Dr. Gawande at a
reception on July 17 in San Diego, CA, during
the AHA/Health Forum Leadership Summit. For more

New Grants Awarded to
HRET to Study Delivery System Innovation and
Improvement
| Dramatic changes to
the U.S. health care system are occurring more
quickly than ever before thanks to health
reform. Through two new projects funded by The
Commonwealth Fund, HRET will provide actionable
information to hospital and health system
leaders that will be critical in coming months.
One project will produce a series of at least
four data briefs covering topics including the
impact of health information technology on
quality and efficiency, the impact of population
health and other factors on hospitals’ efforts
to reduce readmissions, and the relationship
between service integration and hospital/health
system performance. A second project will survey
hospitals and health systems on their readiness
to participate in accountable care
organizations. The project will survey system
leaders on their organizations’ ability to
provide integrated care services, enable
communication among all providers involved in a
patient’s care, and manage financial risk,
receive bundled payment, and calculate and
distribute shared savings to providers. For more
information on these projects, contact Megan
McHugh at mmchugh@aha.org.

Convening Providers
and Policy Makers on Innovative Payment and
Delivery Models
| What are facilitators
and challenges to participating in new models of
care? Through support from The Commonwealth Fund
and in partnership with the American Medical
Group Association and the Medical Group
Management Association, HRET is engaging
providers and policy makers in a dialogue about
the design and implementation of innovative
health care payment and delivery models. The
project will convene an invitational panel of
20-25 representatives of diverse provider
organizations, federal agencies, health services
research organizations, and health care
foundations. The panel will discuss several
complex issues, such as incentives for provider
participation, partnerships across different
types of providers, risk-adjustment of payments,
accountability, and quality benchmarks. The
project will produce a summary report offering
recommendations to the Centers for Medicare
& Medicaid Services and other policy makers
on the design and implementation of new payment
and care delivery models. Click
here for more information on the project.

A Call to
Action: Creating a Culture of
Health
|
|
In a new report,
the AHA’s Long-Range Policy Committee issues a
call to action for hospitals to be leaders in
creating a culture of health. Focusing on the
“wellness” pillar of the AHA’s Health For Life
roadmap for improving America’s health care
system, the report highlights practices that
hospitals use with their own employees, examples
of promising practices and how-to
recommendations to help hospitals continue to be
leaders of health in their communities.
“Hospitals are closely interwoven with the
communities they serve. Therefore it is
paramount for hospital and health system
employees to be example role models for healthy
living and fitness in those same communities,”
said AHA Chairman John Bluford, 2010 chair of
the committee. The AHA and its American Society
for Healthcare Human Resources Administration
will host a free webinar on the report Feb. 23.

A Guide
to Financing Strategies for
Hospitals
|
|
Given economic and
industry trends related to the worldwide
financial markets, the nation's economy, and
U.S. health care reform, access to external
capital has become more important than ever for
hospitals. Reform and market changes are
accelerating hospitals' need for capital to fund
physician employment and integration,
information technology, facility modernization
and expansion, and other initiatives. Successful
health care organizations will need to make
substantial capital investments in each of these
areas. A
Guide to Financing Strategies for Hospitals -
With Special Consideration for Smaller
Hospitals explores strategies that can
help hospitals achieve the best possible capital
access. While the guide provides considerations
related specifically to smaller organizations,
such as rural hospitals, critical access
hospitals, or stand-alone community hospitals,
the strategies are applicable to all health care
organizations, including multihospital systems,
regional systems, and hospitals that are part of
a larger system. Click
here to download the guide.
