The University of Pittsburgh’s Palliative Care Program at UPMC provides services to inpatients at UPMC Presbyterian Montefiore, UPMC Shadyside, and Magee Womens Hospital of UPMC.  The program was established to improve the quality of life of patients with life limiting illness. The program provides comprehensive, coordinated services to seriously ill patients and their families, with emphasis on relief from pain and other disturbing symptoms; integration of physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects of patient care; and development of a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death and to help the family cope during the patient’s illness and in bereavement.  The Program at the three sites is staffed by professionals such as a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, physician, ethicist, social worker, and psychologist, all of whom have expertise in palliative care and work closely with other providers, such as pharmacists, pastoral counselors, and care managers, to coordinate care.

University of Pittsburgh Palliative Care Program has also established an outpatient palliative care clinic at the Hillman Center of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and PACT (Pittsburgh AIDS Comprehensive Treatment).

Research and education activities in palliative care at the University of Pittsburgh occur within the Institute to Enhance Palliative care, which is a university-community partnership between Family Hospice and Palliative Care and University of Pittsburgh.
