Hospitals and the Public's Health

HRET is working with hospital and public health leaders across the nation to create a framework for hospitals' roles in improving the public's health. Through a cooperative agreement with the CDC, HRET is building a portfolio of research, dissemination and convening activities to help create a stronger health infrastructure.

Since 2002, HRET has worked in partnership with the CDC to develop and implement research, education and dissemination activities that:

  • Create a knowledge base of hospitals’ connections to and unique roles in the public health system
  • Emphasize opportunities for hospitals and public health to work more closely
  • Lay new groundwork for understanding how "private health care" fits with a "public health system"

Our current and future activities address:

  • Ensuring preparedness for emerging public health threats
  • Detecting and controlling the spread of infectious disease
  • Preventing and managing chronic conditions
  • Improving access to care for underserved populations
