Technical Assistance
Beginning in 2009, HRET is also offering free individual technical assistance to hospitals interested in implementing rapid HIV testing in labor and delivery units. The training can include information on CDC HIV testing recommendations, test selection, cost, point-of-care vs. lab testing, consent, and linkages to care, among other issues. Training can be on-site or via conference call as needed. Technical assistance is open to hospital staff in labor, delivery, nursery, pharmacy, laboratory, and infectious disease departments.

Learning Collaboratives
In order to provide more tailored attention to specific issues, in 2010 HRET plans to facilitate learning collaboratives. Each collaborative will consist of two representatives from eight hospitals that have similar needs. Some examples of possible focal points include safety net, rural, or community hospitals, hospitals serving African-American, Hispanic, or Asian populations, multisite systems, or geographic area. Discussion and activities will take place both at in-person meetings and on calls.

Online Guide
In the last year of the cooperative agreement, HRET will produce a step-by-step online guide to HIV screening in labor and delivery and the nursery. It will include much of the information and resources presented in the workshops, along with sample forms and protocols, and will be updated as new information becomes available.
