Learning Labs - Geisinger Health System

Geisinger Medical Center is a 437-bed facility located in North-central Pennsylvania, recently named one of the top 100 hospitals in the country.  The Palliative and Supportive Medicine Program began in 2000 and consists of a full time physician and clinical nurse specialist and a part time program coordinator, volunteer coordinator, and operations manager. Clinically, the program offers inpatient and outpatient consultation and long-term follow-up of patients.

In 2004, there were approximately 640 new consults and 2500 revenue-generating patient encounters. Designated acute care palliative medicine rooms are available in the medical center, but patients remain on the referral service. The program also includes a comprehensive bereavement program, extensive educational activities for health professionals and the community, mandatory and elective clinical rotations for residents, research, a patient/family educational resource center, and extensive community outreach programs offered as co-operative programs with regional high schools and universities.
