Research at CHMR

Throughout the history of the Center for Health Management Research, the overriding theme of our research agenda has been the development and growth of hospitals and health care systems, the major strategic and structural effort of our member organizations. Our action-orientated research projects and commissioned papers—the two major components of CHMR’s research activities—have consistently examined key issues in light of the centrality of integrated system formation, operation, and effectiveness.

Research projects sponsored by CHMR are developed according to an annual cycle. In the fall of each year, the CHMR leadership requests specific ideas from CHMR members for research projects.  Based on that discussion, CHMR leadership develops and submits a request for proposal (RFP) to CHMR’s network of university researchers. Proposals from universities are due within six weeks of the solicitation for review by the CHMR leadership and member representatives. Two or three final proposals are selected for presentation at the spring CHMR meeting of the members.  Upon presentation of the completed proposals at the spring meeting, CHMR members vote on which proposal to accept for that particular funding year. All finalists are informed of the decision within one week.  All applicants receive a summary review of their proposals, with more extensive feedback provided to finalists and the successful awardees.

Additional ideas and themes brought forth by CHMR members at the fall meetings are vetted and considered for commissioned papers.
