Director, Research
Gretchen leads HRET's research in health care policy and management. Her work largely focuses on the intersection of health care and population health. Gretchen oversees HRET's research portfolio on Hospitals and Public Health, through which she aims to understand, define and communicate opportunities for hospitals to address the public's health. Gretchen is principal investigator for HIV Prevention in the United States: The Role of Hospitals and program director for HRET's cooperative agreement with the CDC. She is a part HRET's management team, providing strategic direction to the development of HRET's research agenda.
Prior to joining HRET in 2000, Gretchen managed a number of national and international research projects. She has experience in a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques and has had the opportunity to apply them in program evaluations, policy analyses, and studies of individual and organizational behavior.
Gretchen has authored and contributed to numerous articles, briefings, and educational tools tailored to hospital and community audiences, including "The Collaboration Primer: Proven Strategies, Considerations and Tools to Get You Started" (HRET, 2003), Community Care Notebook: A Practical Guide to Health Partnerships (HRET, 2002), "Hospitals as Community Builders" (with Kevin Barnett; Health Forum Journal, 2002), and "Beyond the Medical Model: Hospitals Improve Health through Community Building" (with Kevin Barnett; HRET, 2002).
Gretchen completed her undergraduate work in international relations at Tufts University. She has completed graduate work in research methods and medical sociology and holds a master's in public policy from the University of Chicago. Gretchen is an alumna of the Creative Problem-Solving Institute and actively applies the innovation process to tackling the many issues we face in improving health and health care delivery.
