The Physician Practice Patient Safety Assessment is a free, Web-based tool that allows physician practices to find out whether their processes ensure patient safety to the best extent possible. The assessment allows practices to evaluate medication safety, patient handoffs and transitions, practice management and culture, and patient communication. Completing the assessment helps practices to streamline patient flow, reduce the risk of errors, reduce liability costs, and focus resources on patient care.

The CDC estimates that as many as 25 percent of people who are HIV-positive are unaware that they are carrying the virus. HIV Testing in Emergency Departments: A Practical Guide  helps clinicians and administrators establish processes for screening ED patients for HIV. ED-based HIV screening presents a significant opportunity to reach people who would not normally be tested. Research has shown that patients who learn that they are HIV-positive are more likely to reduce risk behaviors, and detection of the virus encourages earlier access to care.
