AHRQ Safety Program for Long-Term Care: HAIs/CAUTI

The AHRQ Safety Program for Long-Term Care: HAIs/CAUTI supported nursing homes and other long-term care facilities in adopting evidence-based practices to prevent health care-associated infections. Facilities participating in the program learned how to use teamwork and communication tools to improve safety culture in their institutions. The program focused on the most common type of health care-associated infection: catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

The AHRQ Safety Program for Long-Term Care: HAIs/CAUTI was led by the Health Research & Educational Trust of the American Hospital Association through funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality as part of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services National Action Plan to Prevent Healthcare Associated Infections. During the course of the program, expert faculty trained staff of participating facilities on how to implement and effectively use HAI elimination practices and safety culture tools. In addition, LTCF staff received ongoing coaching, data collection and reporting and progress monitoring support from the National Program Team. Participating LTCFs networked on a regional or state and national levels with other facilities enrolled in the program for peer-to-peer learning through activities such as web conferences, virtual and in-person meetings and coaching sessions. Facilities also received program management support from organizational leads representing a variety of stakeholders in long-term care. All nursing homes enrolled in the program participated for approximately 12 months in a cohort. The program launched multiple cohorts of lead organizations and their participating LTCFs throughout its three-year contract period.
